How to Hear the Voice of God: 10 practical ways
Do you want to learn how to hear the voice of God personally? These 10 practical ways will definitely help you.
One of the undeniable packages of our salvation is our ability to hear God’s voice speak to us personally. There can never be anything sweeter and satisfying to a believer than hearing from God personally.
Despite the truth that God always desires to speak to us, the average Christian has a hard time hearing his voice, which is never God’s intent for us.
In the Old Testament, God only makes His mind know to His children through the prophets, but in the new testament, He speaks to us individually.
How to hear the voice of God?
Listening to God is like listening to anyone; before you can hear it, you must be ready to listen. Before you can be able to hear the voice of God, you must be prepared to listen to Him speak to you. Your heart must be free from every form of distractions and focus solely on Him.
The best way to initiate a conversation with God is through prayer. Think of it as saying “hello.” What to do to hear it?
The decision to hear from God is something we must do deliberately. Can we truly understand God speaks? The Bible says we can, and the Bible is one of the main tools through which He speaks.
We live in a world of noise. Almost everywhere we find sounds that compete with our minds, preventing us from letting our thoughts fall below the surface level. Listening to the voice of God means not hearing the noise of the world around us.
King David, one of the prominent king of Israel and author of most of the book of Psalms, gave us a model of encounter with God:
(Psalm 143: 8) “May the morning bring me the word of your unwavering love, because in you I have placed my trust. Show me the path that I must follow, because, to you, I lift my soul.”
First thing in the morning, this wise king always set his mind towards hearing from God and receiving divine instruction for the day. As a general in God’s army, he wanted to listen to his commanding officer before entering battle.
Starting each new day with God is an excellent reminder that, as the Scripture says, His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22, 23). We must find the time of day that works best for us to commune with Him, but the morning is the best time if that is possible.
Do you want to hear God talk to you?
- This requires a regular reading of the Bible since the Bible is the Word of God.
Hearing the voice of God requires a heart committed to understanding his eternal misery.
Most of the time, God speaks to us in uncommon ways. Let see the example of prophet Habakkuk in Habakkuk 2:1. The prophet was eager to hear from God, and so set his mind to wait in His presence until his desire is accomplished.
(Habakkuk 2: 1) “I will stand guard and put myself on the walls; I will look to see what it tells me … “
Habakkuk found that God was faithful. “Then, the Lord replied:
(Habakkuk 2: 2) “Write the revelation and declare it on tablets so that a herald can run with it. Because the revelation awaits a designated time; Talk about the end, and it will not be false. Even if it persists, wait for it; it will undoubtedly come, and it won’t take long. “
- Listening to God requires a correct attitude in our hearts.
Before God can reveal His mind to us, we must like Habakkuk to set our intention to do His will. God honors the heart that is devoted to Him. If we stubbornly cling to our desires, we are likely to receive a confusing message that will not be the voice of God.
Psalm 40: 8 says: “My God, I wish to do your will; Your law is in my heart. ”
Do you want God’s will for your life over any other consuming passion of yours? If indeed, you are desirous of doing His will, you can trust that He will lead your way. You will listen to his voice, and you will obey quickly. Write what He says and share so that others can understand. When you listen to God and obey Him, you will discover a life full and rich in purpose, confident that you are following the Master’s plan.
10 ways to hear the voice of God
How to hear the voice of God on a personal level? Here are some examples of the different ways in which God communicates:
In the past, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets on many occasions and in various ways, but in these last days, he has spoken to us through his Son. “(Hebrew 1: 1-2)
Jesus Christ is the full embodiment of Godhead, and history has a record of people hearing Him speaking directly to the people. Who is Jesus, and what he has done, can speak to you every day of your life.
God’s motives and intentions are revealed in Jesus for all to see.
- The Bible
(Psalm 119: 105) “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light in my way.”
The Bible is the strict standard of measuring the ingenuity of every prophecy, and not only that, God can speak to you directly from the Hi word.
I will never forget some years ago as a young preacher when the Lord’s voice jumped out of the scripture I was reading during my devotion to rebuke me of a certain attitude. As I read that phrase that day, I heard Him speaking to audibly warning me from the text. It is such an unforgettable experience.
The reason why many run up and down, looking for prophets and are being deceived today is that we are too lazy to sit with the word of God. When your heart is filled with the scriptures, your life will be full of God’s inspiration and revelation.
Bible is an authoritative source of hearing the voice of God, and that is why you need to get more committed to reading and studying it.
(Joel 2: 28-29) ” And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
One of the ways God speaks to us in this dispensation is through prophecies. Prophecy is merely sharing a message of the Father’s intention from one person to another person or group of people. There are many different ways in which a prophecy can come out.
(John 14:26) “But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and will remind you of all that I have told you.”
The Holy Spirit can speak through light, fleeting, and spontaneous impressions, such as an impulse or a stimulus to take action. It can come through a check or a warning. This impression can also be physical, like a word of knowledge to heal.
- An image or a vision
God sometimes speaks through visions. These occur mostly as a simple phrase that comes to mind.
The New Testament (NT) also records a “trance” as another way of receiving a vision. (Acts 10: 9-17.) During these types of Vision, awareness of the physical environment remains, but the Vision also seems real to the senses. The third type of Vision is an “open vision, ” in which a person experiences Vision as a physical reality. (Acts 10: 3-4)
- Divine Appointments and Circumstances
God can communicate with us through divine appointments. These are meetings that He has established with a purpose. (Acts 8:27.) A divine appointment is often not planned on our part. The story of the Ethiopian eunuch seen in the above scripture, the encounter of Abraham with Angels in Genesis 18, is typical examples of this.
- Godly Leaders
In the NT, we see that God speaks many times to His children through His chosen leaders. (Acts 13: 2, Acts 15:13, 28, Acts 16:10.) Although leaders are not the only way God speaks to us, we are called to honor them and value God’s word of instruction through them.
The purpose of God giving us godly leaders is to help us understand His purpose for our lives and to help us make the right decisions in our daily walk with Christ. (Acts 14:29, Hebrews 13:17)
- Prophetic Dreams
Bible is full of examples of God speaking to His people through dreams, and this channel of hearing from God is still must available and active. Therefore, you must be able to remember, understand and interpret your dreams (Acts 2:17)
(Matthew 2:12) “But being warned by revelation in dreams that they did not return to Herod, they returned to their land in another way.”
What could have happened to Jesus had it been that Joseph was unable to remember or get the right interpretation for his dream?
- Spoken words
Aside from prophecy, there are other spiritual gifts through which God can speak to us through others, including words of wisdom, exhortation, and knowledge.
These can take place at a time and place determined by Him for such purpose. The Holy Spirit, however, is not constrained in His ways of speaking to His children, for example, we can hear the voice of God speaking to us personally in moments of ordinary conversation.
- Unusual ways
Lastly, on this list, there are many ways, situations, and times when God can speak to us personally through an audible voice.
Philip encountered God through an angelic voice (Acts 8:26) and John through an audible voice. (Revelation 4: 1) while He spoke to Paul through a symbolic vision.
The Old Testament records many more unusual ways that God communicated to his people.
There is no limitation on how we can hear the voice of God. Any way God speaks is significant when it originates in the Holy Spirit. And what is very important is that everything needs to be weighed and tested according to the scripture to be sure the voice we are hearing is from God and not from our environment.
